4. Resources for black history month.
Struggles for Black Community is a DVD with four 38-minute films originally made for Channel 4 at the beginning of the 1980s. They have been remastered and digitised because of recent interest shown by young people in the experiences of racism and the battles fought by their parents' and grandparents' generations. The films chart milestones in Black people's fight for justice in the UK, showing African-Caribbeans and Asians coming together in different ways and at different periods to carry on a common struggle. Price £20 for schools; £13 for individual users. Further details at www.irr.org.uk/2008/november/ha000017.html.

Struggles for Justice provides five free downloadable teaching modules suitable for Citizenship classes at Key Stages 3 and 4. The resource aims to show young people that it is possible to make their voices heard and effect change in society and that this is best achieved when groups and communities pull together, get organised and unite. It does this by using examples from the history of struggles for justice in Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities, stretching back 50 years, and showing how they relate to issues facing BME communities today. The five modules are: Community and Identity; Community Safety; Media and Racism; Racial Discrimination; Youth and Protest. Download them at: www.irr.org.uk/black_history_resource/.

DevEdEssex are offering assemblies on "Black charaters in history" and "Dealing with negaitive sterotypes" as well as providing a CPD course on "Challenging Prejudice and racism through classroom practice". Contact Carol at fairdev4@tiscali.co.uk for further details.

Green Community Hero Awards – celebrating the success of community groups
The Energy Saving Trust, in conjunction with the Guardian, has launched the Green Community Hero Awards. The aim is to recognise and reward community groups whose projects are bringing the community together, saving energy and reducing carbon emissions. The winners will be featured in the Guardian newspaper.

:
21 Sept – Applying to Children in Need, led by Jessica Light from Children in Need. Jessica points out that this fund doesn’t just make big grants – they are encouraging applications to their small grants programme. In the morning she will explain what makes a good application and in the afternoon will be available in the afternoon for one to one appointments with groups who book a slot.

28 Sept – Empowering the Voluntary Sector – Challenging Unjust Public Body Funding and Consultation Decisions, led by Terry Perkins from NAVCA (National Association of Voluntary and Community Action). We ran this course a year ago and it was oversubscribed, so we are running it again. Terry will tell voluntary sector groups about the various options they have when they feel that statutory sector bodies have acted unfairly. This may be even more relevant now in the current difficult climate than it was a year ago.

2 October – Emarketing for the 3rd Sector led by by Andy Brady –from Anglia Ruskin University who is also a director of Social Enterprise East of England
Many voluntary groups are vaguely aware of the possibilities of the internet for publicising their work, but don’t really know how to make best use of the opportunities. This course will give your organisation some tips and techniques to improve your online presence, make the most of social media, and take a strategic approach to e-marketing.
